K5 Learning is an online reading and math program for kids from kindergarten through 5th grade. The program is intended to help kids build reading, math and study skills through independent study. You can use the online program at home, after-school, on weekends and during the summer, or it can also be used in conjunction with a homeschooling program.
Since Summer is almost here, I think it is the perfect time to integrate a program like this into your childrens' schedules. I had the opportunity to do a trial of K5 Learning with my daughter and see what it was like.
How It Works:
Kids complete an online assessment of 8 key reading and math skills, and then work independently and at their own pace through over 3,000 lessons and activities. The lessons are animated, interactive and simple enough that even a 4 year old can use them by himself. The system automatically chooses lessons for students (based on their assessment and past lessons), tracks student progress and provides reports for parents. It includes 4 modules: K5 Reading and K5 Math (curricula based lessons), K5 Math Facts (an adaptive program for developing instant recall in math facts) and K5 Spelling (an advanced spelling and vocabulary tutor).
Benefits for Kids:
K5 helps kids learn essential reading and math skills, develop good study habits, and fulfill their academic potential.
Benefits for Parents:
K5 makes life easier for parents by allowing for effective, independent study by kids. Simplified interfaces, automatic lesson selection, student tracking and reporting all contribute to minimize the amount of daily supervision required.
I think the big difference with this program versus others is the oustanding educational value. It has a clear emphasis on curricula based education. There are no games, entertainment, etc. It also has great assessments and monitoring for both the children and parents, which I liked. If you are looking for a serious education-focused program, it is definitely the way to go! The only set back was that my daughter, who will be going to Kindergarten this fall, for some reason would not do her lessons for very long. I think she was wanting those fun games and entertainment, which we've experienced in other programs. So while I see such great educational aspects, I also think that for young kids, like my daughter, there is a need for the combined entertainment to keep them excited. All in all, I do still agree that K5 Learning is a great educational program!
